About Us

Dr. Triloki Nath Khoshoo (27 April 1927-10 June 2002), founder and trustee of ATREE, was a world-renowned environmental scientist and an able administrator. After a fulfilling career as a botanist, Dr. Khoshoo served as the first Secretary of the newly created Department of Environment of the Government of India in 1982 and contributed to public policy discussions at national as well as international forums. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Sasakawa Environment Prize by the United Nations Environment Programme in 1996.

Dr Khoshoo was a prolific writer. Over five decades, he authored more than 250 research papers on plant genetics and evolution, biomass, energy, forestry, conservation, and, the utilization and management of natural resources. He has written seven books and edited eleven more on a wide range of subjects. His book 'Mahatma Gandhi: An Apostle of Applied Human Ecology', published in 1996, was widely applauded for his interpretation of the practical relevance of Gandhian views. In his memory, the ATREE library was renamed as Dr. T.N.Khoshoo Library on 29th November 2023.


T N Khoshoo Library
 is a unique repository for over 6000 books devoted to the environment, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. It houses books under a range of categories such as philosophy, political science, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, science, mathematics, earth sciences and plants, animals, landscaping and area planning, social problems and social services, and others. The collection includes journals, articles, publications, and audio-visual materials. The library also provides access to JSTOR and Economic and Political Weekly online archival resources.

Services


The library provides open access to its documents and any member can browse through the collections which are arranged according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The library provides an online catalogue to trace these books, which is accessible from the ATREE page. Readers can search for the documents which they require from their desktops or mobile gadgets anywhere in the world. Non-ATREE scientists, practitioners, and students with valid identity cards can visit the library and browse books and journals, but they cannot borrow the books. They can also access online resources through Archives and requests for a PDF copy (conditions apply according to the article copyrights). The library and ATREE offer an attractive study environment supported by well-equipped electronic resources. The library has a thesis and reports, 400 audio/visual materials, having a subscription to many national and international journals in print.

Archives@ATREE is a centralized system that archives all internal publications and research articles. The ATREE Archives is indexed by Google Scholar and also registered in the (ROAR) Registry of Open Access Repository. This user-friendly centralized system acts as a one-stop repository for all ATREE's research papers. Creation of user accounts on the Archives@ATREE repository is restricted to the faculty, staff, and students of ATREE only. Outsiders can view the collection, and request a PDF copy of the article through Archives. Reprint requests should be made for educational and research purposes only.
